A76 New Cumnock and Polneul

A76 New Cumnock and Polneul

Scheme Summary

4-17 August 2022
Overnight Maintenance

UPDATE (15th August): This scheme has been extended to 17th August. Overnight road closures in New Cumnock between Afton Bridgend and Castle Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 August (8pm-6am). Overnight Temporary Traffic Lights in New Cumnock Thursday 11, Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 August. The Polneul Cottage section has been postponed. Traffic management will be removed by 6am on Wednesday 17 August.

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are undertaking improvement works overnight on the A76 in New Cumnock and Polneul. They will take place between 8pm and 6am each night from Thursday 4th August to Friday 12th August 2022. The road will re-open as normal outwith these times.

The first scheme will operate between Afton Bridgend east of the junction with Cairnhill Place and north of New Cumnock Primary School. This scheme, with a value of £161,000, will benefit around 2,800 vehicles using this route each day by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for further, more extensive work in future.

The second scheme will operate at Polneul Cottage, west of Kirkconnel, between 8pm and 6am on Wednesday 10th/Thursday 11th August and Thursday 11th/Friday 12th August.

These schemes require a full closure of the A76 each night at each location while the work is taking place, with a signed diversion in operation.

During the closure a diversion will be in place via the A702 at Carronbridge to Abington Services, then B7078 and A70 to Cumnock.

Following consultation with Police Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway Council and to minimise disruption to residents, a temporary one-way system will be in place on Holestane Road.

Traffic on the A702 will be unable to turn into Holestane Road, instead being directed south along the A702, joining the A76 to Thornhill where vehicles will use the roundabout to make a u-turn and proceed north along the A76 towards Drumlanrig Castle. Vehicles can continue to travel from the A76 east along Holestane Road to the A702.

In addition, a local diversion will be in place for traffic approaching New Cumnock from the south-west on the B741.

Our operatives follow strict physical distancing and hygiene protocols throughout the programme, in line with the current Scottish Government’s COVID-19 guidance.

Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
