Essential Works: M8 J16 - J17 Woodside Viaducts
12 March 2021
PRELIMINARY STRUCTURAL WORKS ON M8 WOODSIDE VIADUCT WILL COMMENCE 23rd APRIL
UPDATE: 15th June 2021
An initial trial site excavation has been completed, with a bridge foundation test support being excavated and exposed, and this has allowed further detailed investigations to take place prior to propping work being commenced. The area is currently fenced off, and traffic management remains in place; and, while no visible works are taking place at this location, a considerable amount of planning and preparation work is ongoing with further construction work and propping to follow once these plans have been fully developed.
Work is currently being undertaken to assess the propping loads to support the structure, in conjunction with Transport Scotland’s Assessment Consultant. This work will inform the design of the Propping Solutions.
At the same time, we are finalising the appointment of specialist contractors and, once the design is completed, we will be working with them to develop the full programme of works, including the permanent repairs.
We are actively liaising with key stakeholders including Glasgow City Council, in relation to the impact on local roads; and with Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) in relation to the next stage of excavations and propping in the vicinity of Glasgow Underground tunnels.
Conversations are also at an advanced stage with Glasgow City Council and the local Housing Association to agree on a site location for the works compound.
We will shortly be undergoing Design Approval and Certification of the repair scheme, including due diligence in the appointment of all 3rd party companies involved in the works.

The next stage of this work involves the excavation of one of the main bridge piers. This work will inform the installation of temporary bridge props, adjacent to the main bridge piers at several locations below the bridge deck in preparation for the permanent repairs.
To ensure the safety of the travelling public and road workers, traffic management and fencing will be installed on the eastbound carriageway of Phoenix Road, reducing it to one lane from 6am on Friday 23rd April 2021. The westbound carriageway will operate as normal. Investigation and excavation work will take place, Monday to Friday, between 8am and 5pm each day.
The north east access ramp to the underpass will be closed but the underpass, north west ramp and stairway will remain open.
The excavation work will be several metres deep with temporary shoring and stabilisation in place for the sections of carriageway that will remain open.
Existing traffic management on the eastbound and westbound M8 Junctions 16 to Junction 17 Woodside Viaduct will remain in place while the excavation and preparation for propping of the structure are ongoing.
From Friday 16th April, restrictions on travel, in place due to the Covid-19 outbreak, have been relaxed. The traffic management measures are designed to ensure all works can be conducted safely should traffic volumes increase. Further updates on timings will be provided as the work progresses.
Members of the travelling public intending to travel on Phoenix Road should plan their journey accordingly and allow extra time for travel or consider an alternative route.
Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.

SPECIAL INVESTIGATION WORK ON M8 WOODSIDE VIADUCTS COMMENCES MONDAY 26th APRIL
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be undertaking special investigation work on the westbound M8 Junctions 16 to Junction 17 Woodside Viaducts from Monday 26th April until Friday 30th April 2021, between 10pm and 6am, each night.
This work will inform future planned maintenance on these structures. The work will be carried out using a full road closure of the westbound carriageway at this location (between Junctions 15 and 19) with a signed diversion route in operation. There will also be an offside lane closure on the eastbound carriageway at the Charing X concrete repair works.
Traffic travelling westbound on the M8 will be diverted to exit the motorway at Junction 15 and they will be able to re-join via the Junction 19 on-slip road.
ESSENTIAL WORKS ON THE M8 WOODSIDE VIADUCT COMMENCES 12th MARCH
Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be undertaking essential maintenance on the bridges of the eastbound and westbound M8 Junctions 16 to Junction 17 Woodside Viaduct from Friday 12th March 2021.
Following the advice from a structural assessment, these works are being immediately progressed to address deterioration identified on both the eastbound and westbound structures. This is to ensure the continued structural integrity of the bridges, and compliment future refurbishment work.
Forthcoming work will see the installation of temporary bridge props installed adjacent to the main bridge piers at several locations below the bridge deck, in preparation for a permanent repair. Pre-construction work and investigations commenced on Friday 12th March, with the first of the props expected to be installed in April.
To ensure the safety of road workers and the travelling public, speed and lane restrictions will be in place on the M8 for the full extent of these structures; and associated eastbound slip roads at Junctions 17 and Junction 18 and westbound slip roads at Junction 15 on slip and Junction 17 off slip will be closed. Slip roads at Junction 16 remain open. Signed diversion routes are in operation, and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained throughout.
Narrowed lanes have been introduced on the mainline of the M8 through the structures. HGVs are being encouraged to consider using an alternative route due to these narrow sections.
- Eastbound Junction 18 on slip diversion: Traffic will travel on the A804 St Georges Road to Phoenix Road, Dobbie’s Loan to the Junction 16 eastbound on slip road.
- Eastbound Great Western Road on slip diversion: Traffic will travel via West Graham Street to Garscube Road then onto Dobbie’s Loan to Junction 16 eastbound on slip road.
- Westbound Junction 15 on slip road diversion: Traffic will travel via Springburn Road, Royston Road, A804 Baird Street, Dobbie’s Loan, Phoenix Road and then re-join at Junction 17 Westbound.
- Westbound Junction 17 off slip diversion: Traffic will travel via the Junction 19 off slip road to Argyle Street to North Street and follow signage.
